Good to know: Queensland planning notes for 2029
Queensland runs its Labour Day public holiday in May, earlier in the year than most other states. Brisbane also has a public holiday of its own: Ekka People’s Day, held during the Royal Queensland Show, which applies to the Brisbane local government area rather than the whole state — useful to know if you’re comparing QLD holidays with other states and expect every date to be statewide. As with every state, Catholic and independent schools set their own calendars and may include additional pupil-free days not shown on the government dates above. Queensland is one of the few states that gazettes Student Free Days centrally, so every state school shares the same pupil-free dates each year rather than each school choosing its own — useful if you need to plan around them well in advance. As with the Ekka holiday, always check whether a date applies statewide or only to a particular local government area before booking travel around it.

Is Ekka People’s Day a public holiday across all of Queensland?
No. Ekka People’s Day, held during the Royal Queensland Show, is a public holiday for the Brisbane local government area only. Schools outside Brisbane generally run as normal on that day.
Why is Queensland’s Labour Day at a different time of year?
Queensland observes Labour Day in May, whereas several other states hold their equivalent holiday in March or October. It’s a good reminder to check each state’s public holiday list separately rather than assuming they line up nationally.
Are Catholic and independent school dates different in Queensland?
They can be. Queensland Catholic and independent schools set their own student dates and pupil-free days, which sometimes differ from the government school dates shown on this page. Confirm directly with your school.
